The Nkuringo sector which lies closely to the Buhoma sector is about 10 km from Buhoma although this distance is covered by the Impenetrable Forest and a walk through the forest takes about 4 hours. Connecting by the car from the two points takes about 7 to 8 hours. Villages at Nkuringo also operate a community walk that visits a traditional healer, rural homestead, blacksmith and brewers. Nkuringo sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi Forest, one of the forests in Uganda that inhabit and protect the 400 mountain Gorillas left in the world although the park has 4 sectors were Gorillas can be trekked and Nkuringo is one of the sectors.

The park is a tourist destination and a world heritage to protect the population of Mountain Gorillas. Some Gorillas are located on the slopes of volcanoes in Mgahinga National park.

In the deep thick and high part of Bwindi Forest lives the Gorilla family ‘Nkuringo’ which was named after the ‘rolling hills’ where the Family was first sighted. The habituation of this family was launched in 2004, the hills are the very first picture one would see when travelling to this sector.

Nkuringo family has 12 members in the family that are undergoing habituation, this group members used to be found in the villages and this became the reason for them to be habituated since they were seen destroying people’s crops, the group was opened for tourists so the communities could benefit from the mountain Gorillas.

The sector has only the Nkuringo family and this group which originally was led by the silverback Nkuringo who died on 2008,and later Safari and Rufiki the Silverbacks took over the power to led the family . In the same year the family welcomed a set of twins from Kwitonda the twin mother ,the twins were named Muhozii and Katungi making the family to expand more however Katungi died before turning 2 years.

Nkuringo sector has different activities carried out although the main activity is Gorilla trekking, the activities include community walks, learn about the day to day life of the local people share meals and stories. Batwa trail interact with the first people who lived in the forest caves, learn about their life how they lived in the forest and survived.

Visit the community schools learn and interact with these children how they learn with no computers but very knowledgeable.

Tracking through Nkuringo needs more of physical fitness and good energy, it’s one of the toughest trail / trek in Bwindi forest but after this experience which is rewarding lifetime and rewarding adventure, one cannot complain of the hard time spent during the trek.
